The History of women’s Lacrosse Uniforms – You’ve Come a Long Way Baby

Today, The Wave is going to explore how women’s lacrosse uniforms and girls’ lacrosse uniforms have changed over the years.  You probably already know that lacrosse was created by the Native Americans and the early Western Europeans became interested in the game which would become the popular sport of lacrosse that we know today.  Did you know the first recorded women’s lacrosse game was played in 1890 in St.  Andrews, Scotland at St. Leonards School?  Miss Louisa Lumsden the headmistress of the school had visited a match between the Canghuwaya Indians and the Montreal club.  She was fascinated by the game and she introduced it to St. Leonards Girls School.  The rules of women’s lacrosse differ a great deal from men’s lacrosse.  Men’s lacrosse uniforms and women’s lacrosse uniforms also differ significantly.  Women’s lacrosse uniforms have drastically changed over the years and are still changing today.  In the early 1900’s the girls lacrosse uniform consisted of a one-piece long button-down dress with a rounded collar and belt.  By the 1930’s the hem on the girl’s lacrosse uniform shortened and the girls wore a long sleeve blouse with a pleated jumper.  The women’s lacrosse uniform continued to change over the decades.  You may wonder why female lacrosse players still wear skirts.  The answer is because of tradition.  Since the beginning women have worn kilts, skirts or skorts and this tradition continues today.  Although there are some girls’ lacrosse teams that choose to wear shorts, the majority of girls’ lacrosse uniforms include a kilt and a jersey.  So, the debate of shorts vs skirts continues.
